Director’s recognition for innovation and leadership

The Director’s Recognition for Innovation and Leadership Award celebrates individuals in Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) who have combined the characteristics of innovation and leadership to improve our system and advance the strategic direction goals of improving student learning and achievement, and fostering student and staff well-being. The award is presented by the director of education, Wes Hahn, at each TLDSB Public Meeting of the Board. Hahn introduced this month’s recipients:

Trish Dobson, teacher librarian at Haliburton Highlands Secondary School, has reinvented what a librarian can do to impact students’ lives, daily. Her endless research into best practices and a collaborative approach with the Language Department teachers has made a difference school-wide. Dobson’s educational background and primary focus is on reading and literacy, however, she has also supported students and staff in all curriculum areas to ensure students have reading material at their appropriate level. She has also extended the weekly small group learning model to work with other departments outside her English comfort zone, most recently with great success in French and even math.

2024 TLDSB Arts Showcase

Curriculum Services consultant, Maggie Rodger, shared details about the upcoming Better Together Arts Showcase through a video by Brody, a secondary school student. This showcase will celebrate the talents of students and empower them to work with teachers to create awareness of our connection to one another on the theme of “better together.”
Rodger shared that over 75 classes have signed up to participate to date and that there will be three showcases in each region of the Board for trustees, staff, and families to attend.

The Arts Showcase events will take place on Tuesday, April 30, at I.E. Weldon Secondary School, Thursday, May 2, at the Muskoka Education Centre, and Tuesday, May 7, at Fleming College, Haliburton Campus.

Director’s report

With a focus on the goals of the 2022-2027 TLDSB Strategic Plan, director of education, Wes Hahn, highlighted areas of focus that perpetuate a culture of learning at all levels of our system. These include:

  • In School Teams (IST’s) in elementary and Secondary Success Teams (SST’s) are regularly meeting to ensure they are supporting at-risk students early on in the process by creating individualized plans to help them succeed.
  • The professional learning that took place in the fall of this school year is being implemented by educators as part of their classroom teaching strategies throughout our system.
  • Superintendents continue to work directly with principals on the instructional learning taking place in each school.
  • A Directons Team Meets regularly with a focus on school improvement planning and principles meet with staff regularly to plan for the implementation of strategies to make improvements in their school.
  • The director’s forums on student voice, staff voice, and a new forum dedicated to understanding more about student attendance is taking place this spring.

Hahn noted that budgeting, staffing, and leadership development continue to progress and more updates will be coming to the Board this spring.
