Both IEWSS rugby teams compete at RugbyFest 2025

Submitted by I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS):

The IEWSS Wildcats Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls Rugby teams travelled to New Brunswick on April 24 to 28 to participate in the 34th Annual RugbyFest.

This year’s tournament was hosted by Rothesay Netherwood School, located just outside of Saint John, and saw more than 30 teams from the Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario.

Both IEWSS teams clawed their way to their respective championships on the final day of the tournament:

The Varsity Boys Team finished as championship finalists, losing a competitive match 12-0 to Crescent School from Toronto. In the championship game, IEWSS Grade 11 student, Brock Wilson, was chosen by Crescent School as the “player of the match” for his solid performance during the game.

The Varsity Girls Team finished on top, winning the championship game in a nailbiter over last year’s champs, King’s Edgehill School from Nova Scotia. After being tied 12-12 at the end of regulation play, the game needed overtime kicks, where the Wildcats won 2-0 on kicks by IEWSS Grade 10 student, Zoe Karkoulas, aka “ICE,” and IEWSS Grade 10 student, Piper Smallwood, aka “ROWDY RODDY,” to become the 2025 Rothesay Rugbyfest Champions. The team was honoured and awarded with an awesome championship banner for their efforts.

“Congratulations to the entire Weldon Rugby Program on a successful, and memorable tour to New Brunswick…GO WILDCATS!” said IEWSS Boys and Girls Head Rugby Coach, Kirk Wilson.
